NT locking me out of certain files

I have one or two Access97 database files on my machine which is running
NT 4.0 workstation, stand-alone. I have set up a customised Office
toolbar with shortcut buttons to the aforementioned mdb files. This has
never before been a problem. This morning I start up my PC and click on
the toolbar shortcut button that should open a very simple address book
database that was created by the Access DB wizard and tailored by me.
Instead of opening Access followed by the DB, I get the message "Access
to the specified device, path or file is denied". If I try and open the
file from explorer, same message. And yet, if I open Access first, then
do File, Open Database, and select the file in the usual way, it opens
with any trouble.

This is happening to all MDB files on my machine, and happens regardless
of whether I am logged in as Administrator or not.

Can anyone suggest why NT is suddenly deciding to be awkward, cos its a
bit of a pain in the old deriere.

I had the same problem with Adobe Illustrator not wanting to open .ai or
.eps files from Explorer. Same error message.

The problem turned out to be a space in the path to the data file or
application.

In the Illustrator example, I changed the file association command for
OPEN so that it was enclosed in quotes and all seems fine now.

Hope this helps.

Sadly no. I had encountered the exact problem that you describe a while
ago, and fixed it by replacing spaces in the paths with underscores and
actually renaming files and directories. Now the address book DB that I
mentioned has the full path d:\Home_Stuff\Address_Book.mdb, but has
started to give the error message again.

I think my problem was caused by a space in the path to Illustrator...

Does Access have a space its path?

In your shortcut's properties, try using the MSDOS file names for the
program and mdb, e.g. c:\progra~1\access.

I find this solves 99% of my file name probs.
