Does anyone use a product that will replicate the system to another Windows NT machine to give a hot standby even when files are open on the master system ? The solution would be better without using a function within the database product ? It does not matter whether it is a hardware or software solution Replies to mark@russells.demon.co.uk

Let me know if you find something in software. Compaq offers some hardware junk, and of course there is clustering. So far I've only met with SCSI device drivers which work over the network (non-fire-wire) by a company from Israel. Tom

Check for "Octopus" at www.sunbelt-software.com or www.sunbelt.co.uk We don't use it, but from the ads it seems to address your problem. Mark - This is what Failover Clustering is all about. Look into WolfPack from NT and Digital Clustering from DEC. -- William L. Having experience with both Octopus and Vinca Standby Server for NT, I would recommend the Vinca Standby Server for NT. My experiences with Octopus have never been fun. During our last attempted install and setup of the Octopus product we had so many problems that the Octopus engineers came onsite 3 times. After 3 visits from their engineers the Octopus software still did not function properly. I then brought in the Vinca Standby Server for NT and had everything configured and working correctly in under 45 minutes. The call is ultimately yours, but I recommend Vinca highly! Check out also FirstWatch from Veritas http://www.veritas.com . It does not "replicate the system" (mirroring?) but provides a hot standby solution that will failover in a couple of seconds. Agents are provided and can be developed to make decisions about when a failover should occur (a table in a database becoming corrupt or a service stopping). Th product is fairly easy to install and IMHO very reliable.
