I have 4 machines networked. From the server (NT workstation 4.0) No problem: I can access all machines. The problem arises when I try to log on with the stations (which are running under win95) I always get a prompt for a password. I don't remember having set up one. Anyways, I've tried everypsw that I knew of I still couln'd be allowed to log in. Any ideas? Help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jeff NAdeau

I sometimes have the same problem, and to me it seems that it's a problem of the difference in security for both systems: W95 being password based and NT being permission based. When I'm logged in on the W95 machines as a user that is already defined on the NT machine AND that has already logged on for at least one time on this NT, I have (so far) no problems. However in the other case, a password is asked for the $IPC directory. So try to keep your user definitions consistent (so no Bill on the NT and Gates for the W95 when dealing with the same user). Or perhaps it's a problem of sharing. Something else on security: if for instance you know there exists a user Bill on a NT machine with certain exclusive permissions on data directory's , isnt't it possible (and in fact very easy) to define the same user on a W95 (with your own password of course) and bypass the security of the NT in order to get access to his data on the NT machine? _______________________________________________________________________________ Dominique Vlieghe Labo MSC - KULeuven Celestijnenlaan 200F B-3001 Heverlee Belgium Tel. + 32 16 32 74 68 Fax. + 32 16 32 79 90 E-mail: Dominique.Vlieghe@chem.kuleuven.ac.be WWW: http://helix.chem.kuleuven.ac.be:8000 _______________________________________________________________________________

Try enabling the Guest user in the server by mean of the User Manager. Log on from the Win 95 workstations with a user name not defined on the server. And now? Set up an account on the NT workstation. When you log into you Windows 95 machine use that username in the login box. When you connect to NT it is asking for the password for the username that you used when you first started 95.
