My Roommate and I are running a TCP/IP network using NT 4.0 and we use a
program called Wingate. I have a modem and Wingate allows him to dial
thru my modem. When he checks his mail with Eudora or loads Netscape,
etc it dials my modem. The only problem is that his browser and mail
client has to be configured to use proxies in order for it to work.
Heres the URL for Wingate

Get Wingate, it is an easy, and cheap software program that will do exactly
what you are looking for.

There is a cheap program which allows sharing of COM ports in NT, I
don't remember the name but I used it in my last job. If that is what
is wanted mail me and I'll find out what it was called.

He is asking modem sharing, not access the Internet with one modem in
the LAN.

As I know, Windows NT do not allow COM port sharing but OS/2 do. But you
need to have both the Server and Workstation are OS/2. A Windows
clients cannot do this. But I don't think OS/2 is a good workstation
platform. So hope you have a better alternative.

I think that program is WinPort. It allows to share a COM port along a
LAN.
WinPort should be on Internet. Try with a search engine...

Try the different solutions available at:

They list several modem sharing solutions there.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone have any info on modem sharing for the home office? I have
NT workstation running on one PC (with the modem) and Win95 on the
other. Spartacom's prices are definitely not for the home user! It's
starting to look like the least expensive solution is to buy a second
modem!

Try a program called Wingate. Can't remember the internet site address
but you can download it from there (just search for it).

Best I remember its free as long as you only share with one other
computer.

Everyone says its great!

Try wingate. It's not a modem sharing software, but a proxy server.
You can download a working demo from www.deerfield.com. The only
limitation of this demo is that you can only acess the net through
wingate from only one remote station at a time. That your case: You
can acess internet from your NT server/workstation (where the modem is
connected) and from the W95 machine (the remote station).

Wingate is a Proxy server I believe. Frankly, a second modem might be
the best choice...

Give Wingate a try. Free for your situation, it does have some limits
but if you just need access for browsing, FTP etc its fine. When I
get my next system I'm gonna register mine. :)
