Dual boot

Hello,

I've got 2 hard disks in my computer. One on which is WinNT 4.0, my primary
OS. On the other one, I keep Win95, primarily for games play. My current
situation is as follows: every time I want to boot Win95, I have to switch
my hard disk cables so that my second hard disk becomes the first disk, and
vice versa. And when I want to boot NT again, I have to do the same job...

I know it is possible to dual boot with WinNT, but it implies modifying the
boot.ini file, which is located in the root folder. I've already tried
several settings, but I can't get it right (I've included my current
boot.ini file).

I really hope any of you guys can help me with this problem. What I would
like to have, is a boot.ini file that would make it possible to dual boot
between WinNT 4.0 and Win95 (by the way, my NT disk is NTFS, and the Win95
disk is FAT).

Please do not reply to the newsgroup message, but direct all mail to my
email address.

Regards,

Jurgen De Dobbeleer (jurg@unicall.be)

P.S.: Don't mind the F-drive in the boot.ini file (A: floppy, B: /; C:
first hard disk; D: partition on first hard disk; E: CD-ROM; F: second hard
disk)

	....... (snip)

Windows95 should be installed on the first hard disk on the
C:\ partition and NT on the second hard disk. Windows95
only works if its installed on the first hard disk on C:\

But you keep your name secret so noone can check it :)

BTW, is it possible to install WIN95 _after_ NT4.0 ?
The WIN95 setup exits with error message.
I'm using Nt 4.0 and 6.2/3.11 now, and I want to upgrade my 6.2/3..1 to
WIN95.

So, if I want to have DOS 6.2, WIN 3.1, WIN95, and WIN NT4.0,
can I do following?

(I currently have DOS, Win 3.11, and NT on C:\).

For my second computer, I want to put Win 95 for my Kid's games.

Can I put Win 95 in D:\ directory in a same primary HDD?
Can the Win 95 system files can be shared with NT as NT can share
the windows directory with Win 3.11?

Is Boot manager of NT going to handle booting process to choose
DOS, Win95 or NT?

YES to all. I am running NT4.0, Windows '95, and DOS 6.22. Your Windows 3.11
requires the Dos 6.22 environment and hence can be run directly after booting
to DOS.

I am not sure that is a true issue. If the drive is in FAT format,
you might want to try this (disclaimer this will destroy nt on your
harddrive forcing a recovery if this wont work, and a reinstall if you
delete it). Put a boot disk in the
drive ( DOS or 95 is fine) and type SYS C:. THis copies dos system file
onto the system, then delete the windows Nt files. Then use the DOS prompt
to install WIn 95. In theory it should work. I have not stepped through
this process farther than acidently geting my windows nt machine to boot
to dos when i wanted to recover it..( i was new then). GIve it a shot, it
might just work, and then you would have all your data.

I have NT installed on a 1 gig NTFS primary partition
FreeBSD installed on a 500 meg primary
and DOS installed on a 500 meg primary
I can boot any of the three using NT boot loader
I installed NT first, then FreeBSD, then DOS
I had to use FreeBSD to make the files bootsect.bsd and bootsect.dos
then put them in boot.ini, and voila!
I can see all partitions in all operating systems
NT see my Dos partition as D:
FreeBSD doesn't support NTFS, but I can mount my dos partition from
/dev/wd0s4
and in Dos I can see my NT partition as e: using ntfsdos.exe

Works great! Just be sure to make the dos partition in dos, not NT

I don't know where the rumour came from that c: has to be NTFS if you
want to boot dos from D: (DOS sees it as C: of course)

You just need to be able to make the bootsector files your self.

Good luck!

That is the way that I did it: installing DOS first onto a FAT C:
partition, then installing win3.11 on C:. I installed NT onto a D:
partition (that could be either NTFS or FAT. I've done it both ways).
Then I installed Win95 onto a FAT E: partition.

When the system starts the NT boot loader menu offers choices of
booting into NT or "MSDOS". Choosing DOS from this menu starts
Windows 95. If I hit the F8 function key when "Starting Windows 95"
is displayed, I get a menu with one option being something like,
"start previos version of DOS". Choosing this option will go into
6.22 and then Win3.1 if so configured. When I reinstalled something
I lost my "previous version of DOS" menu option, but that was
working fine for quite awhile.

One thing that I picked up from this thread is that the C: drive
should be FAT with DOS system files installed on it to make things
simpler. I believe the others that it is possible to fix up BOOT.INI.
That's interesting. I never knew about that, but installing things
as I said I never had to worry about such things. Everything just
worked.

I don't believe this. My experience is contrary.

You could do this, I think, IF you want to install dual boot with
another partition and use something like partition magic. That would
require creating the new partition, installing the dual boot option,
and then moving your existing Dos/Windows installation to the new
partition before doing the 95 upgrade. Since you would then be
installing 95 on the partition w/o NT, you should be able to preserve
you NT install. Of course, if you want to have NT and 95 on the same
partition, you're probably out of luck, in terms of being able to do
what you want without installing everything all over again.

I had dual boot NT4/ dos6.2/windows for workgroups.
I simply booted in dos with access to the cdrom.
Win 95 complained i had another os and stuff.
I simply Ran the setup in win95 dirctory on the cd rom thats it.
When I rebooted win 95 had taken over dos6.2-windows for workgoups slot on the
multi boot option the nt gives.

I wnt back deleted the dos6.2 and windows for workgroups.
Now I have N4/ win95 on the same partition and disk.
Note:
I installed win95 oem2
Boot partition(c:) is formatted using fat16
Nt4 cant read fat32
win95 cant read ntfs
