I have received the following info to cure a problem with NT 4.0 SP 2
which broke PPP to my ISP on ASCEND modems (only). USRs worked OK.
The info here is credited to support at demon internet (thanks) and
works (for me).
****** Follows info from Demon Internet ******
Windows NT 4 Service Pack 2 breaks PPP in an ASCEND environment. If
your ISP (e.g. Demon Internet) uses ASCEND modems you will probably
experience these problems.
Symptoms :-
1. PPP UserId/Password will negotiate okay.
2. System registers you on the network okay.
3. Connection to the ISP is established okay.
4. You are then unable to PING anything using DNS.
5. If you PING an IP ADDRESS all the REQUESTS TIME OUT.
6. After about 20 seconds the ISP will disconnect the LINK
with you.
The problem so far has only been identified with ASCEND modems. USRs
seem okay.
Solution :-
Find the following Registry Key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP
Add the following Registry Value to this Key.
Value Name : DisableMultiLink
Data Type : REG_DWORD
Data : 1
You now need to ShutDown and Restart the system.
