I have a plain-jane ISA 486/50, 16 MB of RAM running NT Server 3.50. I'm trying to install two Adaptec 1542CF cards (call them Card A and Card B) and I'm having problems. The setup: Card A is set to i/o = 330, IRQ=11, DMA=5 and uses BIOS so I can boot from the hard disk and the floppy controller so I can use a floppy drive. Card B is set to i/o=334, IRQ=12, DMA=7, with the floppy and the BIOS disabled. Card A has a hard disk and a tape drive. Card B has a six cd-rom tower connected to it. The machine also has generic VGA and Ethernet cards in it. The symptoms: The system will boot, and NT knows that I have two SCSI cards (they are listed in they registry), but NT can't find the CD-ROMs. What I've tried: I've swapped cables, swapped the cards for one another and generally fiddled with the hardware enough to believe that the problem isn't with bad equipment or termination problems. The problem seems to be tied to the IRQ and DMA that I use for the second card. If I remove Card A, remove the CD-ROM tower, attach the hard disk to Card B, I should be able to boot the machine. Instead, I get a error indicating that that the reconfigured Card B can't find a boot disk. The error goes away if I reconfigure Card B to use the default IRQ and DMA. Is anyone running multiple Adaptec 1542 cards under NT? -darin!
