Courier I Modem question
#25

I have a 2 year old US Robotics Courier ISDN/V34 external modem.

I have hitched it up to a Backoffice SBS 4.5 server and used the default
modem driver built into NT.

I am not interested in the analog part of the modem, only to use it for ISDN
access at 64K.

It works reasonably well but I notice that I'm getting a lot of CRC and
hardware overrun errors reported by dialup networking monitor. This is I
think causing the speed of internet access to be less than it should be.

Do I need to use a different driver? If so, how can I easily replace the
driver without cocking up my RAS and DUN settings (which work but not
perfectly). This is a working server, in use all day, so I don't want to
cock it up.

Or does the firmware in the modem need updating? I note that most of the
drivers etc refer to the Courier ISDN / V90 modem, not V34.

Ideally what I would like is somebody to say, 'Oh yes, you can just add a
couple of commands into the modem init string to solve the problem without
updating anything'. Dream on, I suppose.

All help much appreciated.

Andy

Do you get those errors while scrolling a window, using a mouse in the
scroll bar? Matrox, and some other video adapter vendors, has written
drivers that use a too optimistic registry setting, that can result in a
CRC error.

If you have a Matrox card, change this setting to 1:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\mgax64\Device0\User.SynchronizeEngine
and reboot.

If you use another adapter, check with your vendor, or read the
documentation that came with your driver.

Also, check that FIFO is enabled in the advanced settings in Ports, Control
Panel.

Best regards

Bjorn
