I have a SB AWE32 ISA card installed on home-built machine. Today, I reinstalled Windows NT 4. Following the directions at Creative's site, I unpacked AWENT40.EXE and installed the drivers. Everything is working, except that every time I login to the Administrator account, I get a message that Plug-n-play has detected a new device, the one for 3d Stereo Enhancements. I don't get any prompts about what driver to install -- the message indicates the driver is being installed automatically. Unfortunately, I don't know what driver that is. For now, I've disabled PNP to get rid of this annoyance. But why is it occurring? Is there a driver I can install manually? I've tried uninstalling all the Creative drivers, and reinstalling. No joy. -- Paul

Removing the Sound Blaster drivers is not an easy proposition. The instructions are in the readme.txt file for Awent40.exe. The same applies in regards to what to do when asked for the 3D stereo enhancement.

I followed those directions, using UPDPNPNT.EXE to remove the drivers. No luck -- the message appears with each login after the drivers are reinstalled. I believe the 3D Enhancement driver is not part of AWENT40.EXE, since the directions suggest accepting the "default NT driver". So removing it probably requires some other procedure. -- Paul Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

Thanks for refreshing my memory. Have been using Turtle Beach Montego II sound cards lately. Creative Lab's instructions are somewhat vague and it has been that way ever since the original awent40.exe files were generated years back. Reference to the "default driver" for 3D enhancement probably refers to a file in the WinNT distribution cdrom. The 3D Stereo Enhancement feature is a component found in the volume control (mixer) panel. To do the SB AWE32 installation again, follow the instructions to remove the "old", i.e., existing drivers, and try reloading the drivers again. Keep the NT4 cdrom in the drive. When asked for the "NT default driver", you may have to browse to find it. A good starting point is \drvlib\audio\sbpnp\i386. One cannot omit any steps or error messages will continue to appear. That was the way it was, and still is, with the Sound Blaster cards. Good luck. steck@cs.rice.edu wrote: > In article <3A3D6527.E2460460@danang.rvn>, > Mistoffolees <mistyfac01@danang.rvn> wrote: > > If the message disappears after disabling PNP OS in the system bios > setup, then > > it should be quite OK. Unfortunately, I don't actually get the prompt for the "NT default driver", even after uninstalling the Sound Blaster drivers. Instead, after the drivers have been reinstalled, I get the message that the Stereo Enhancement hardware is new, and NT is installing drivers for it. That happens on each login. When logging in as a user, not Administrator, I get an error message about new hardware. I think NT is finding the driver file on disk, and just using that. If I knew which driver file(s) corresponds to the Stereo Enhancement feature, I could delete it, and perhaps it would install correctly then. Funny thing is, this is a reinstall of NT on this machine on a new hard disk. I didn't get this problem with the original install. -- Paul Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

Unfortunately, I never get asked for that default driver, probably because it's already on disk, or because of some Registry setting. That's true even after uninstalling drivers per Creative's instructions. Do you know what driver is used for the Stereo Enhancement feature? -- Paul Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

NT just claims to be installing it for me. I've tried uninstalling and reloading the drivers. NT doesn't find the Stereo Enhancement hardware until the reboot after it's found the other hardware. But then it finds claims that the Stereo Enhancement hardware is "new" on every login or reboot. If I knew what the driver actually was, maybe I could remove it, and force it to be reinstalled. Or maybe there's a registry setting that can be fixed. -- Paul Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

And then reboot the computer, as mentioned previously? If this doesn't work, then delete all of the SoundBlaster files, disable pnpisa.sys (unless it is needed by an other device), remove the sound card and reboot. This should clear the registry. Next, re-install the sound card...it should not be detected, and start setting up the SB drivers from the top, starting with pnpisa.sys. If this re-install does not resolve the problem, then it means a de novo install of NT. One little misstep with the driver installation for any SB PnP card is disastrous. The other alternative is to use a different sound card and the TB Montego II is currently on sale. This is one sound card which has written for NT and not as an after thought. Finally, one last question: PnP OS is disabled in system bios setup, right?
