Expanding FAT to NTFS partition under NT
#26

I have a 4 gig drive with an NT bootable 2 gig FAT partition.

I know I can have NT convert it to an NTFS partition, but how do I get
it to use all 4 gig of the drive ?

I assume you have a 2Gb NTFS partition on the rest of the drive (or
another partition anyway. The only tool that I know of which will
expand partitions is Partition Magic (available from all good software
dealers). Whether it will merge two partitions is another matter.

If you wanted to convert the 2Gb FAT partition to NTFS and then expand
it to 4Gb's you could probably do it with Partition Magic providing
you deleted the other 2Gb partition (if it exists).

It's 43ukp + VAT and carriage from Software Warehouse. I've forgotten
who makes it but if you do a Yahoo Search for Partition Magic you may
find the developers web site to obtain more information from.

Frequently and with regret !

I guess I'd kind assumed that if NT could support 4 gig partitions,
there'd be a way to boot from ones that big ! Oh well...

Indeed.

There is, but it's tricky to manage if you decide this after the install.

I have a feeling this only works if you do a 'boot from floppy' install
(using the three installation disks) rather than winnt /b, but you can
create and delete partitions during the install process as well as choose
an unformatted section of the disk for install and let NT deal with
formatting it prior to install. Some of these bit's aren't obvious if you
are not aware that they are there, but the're not to hard to find if you
know to look for them.

I guess you need to tell NT not to put its files on the disk that you
are about to partition.

I'll give it a go when my next 4 gig drive comes in.

Doesn't FAT have a 2GB limit on partition size?

OK, forget the notion of expanding my old FAT partition. Is it possible
to get a 4 gig NT boot partition by simply installing to a drive that is
either preformatted with a 4 gig NTFS space or just has its space
unallocated ?

There are other drives on the system that could be used for storing
temporary files but those are NTFS rather than FAT. Can the installer
cope with that ?

I thought the other 600 meg was HPFS ?

I find this sort of "trivia" fascinating, I will reinstall NT 4.0
server and deliberately crash it. I would like to know where it is
putting the "bootstrap" files. I can't think of a good reason why :)
