HELP! BC++4.5 IDE crashes when selecting greyed menu items!

In the Borland C++ 4.5 IDE, I get this dialog whenever I drag the
mouse over a greyed-out menu item (including a greyed item in the
System menu!):

So I can apparently use the IDE as long as I don't accidentally move
the mouse over a greyed menu item :-/. The same happens if I am
selecting menu items from the keyboard (by moving the highlight up and
down with the cursor keys, but not if I type the keyboard shortcut
directly).

I have tried removing everything but the essentials from CONFIG.SYS,
AUTOEXEC.BAT, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI, with no effect on this behavior.
Everything else in the system seems to work fine, including other
Borland executables.

The machine in question is an AST Premmia (66MHz '486) running Windoze
3.1.  BC++4.5 is being run from the (NEC Multispin) CD-ROM drive.

Anyone have any clue about what could be causing this?  Any help would
be appreciated.
