PROPOSAL: creation of group alt.lang.basic.ca-realizer
Purpose: Discussion and questions about the applications
programming language "CA-Realizer" from Computer
Associates. CA-Realizer is a graphically oriented
programming environment consisting of a "form" generator
that creates code for dialog and information boxes and
a programming language compiler for a superset of the
Basic programming language. The application sells in
computer stores and provides both an OS/2 and MS-Windows
environment in the same package.
Reason for creating this newsgroup:
The CA-Realizer programming language is a feature-rich
system for designing applications. It is essentially a
competing package to Visual Basic, but runs under both MS
Windows and OS/2. As such it operates differently from
Visual Basic and includes different features and poses
different questions as well as different conditions. The
issues involved are similar but are different enough as
to cause confusion if discussed under the banner of
visual basic since the examples for one system may not
work on the other.
Why other groups are not sufficient:
Some other groups dealing with the basic language include
comp.lang.basic.misc, alt.lang.basic, comp.lang.basic.visual.
These other groups (except .visual) deal with all forms of
Basic, and may or may not have the focus to deal with a GUI-based
programming environment which provides much more than just a
compiler. Also, they would probably not have the focus to deal
with a specialized application. (This is probably why Visual
Basic has its own group.) CA-Realizer is a visual applications
generating tool as well as a superset of the Basic Programming
Language. In that respect, it is similar to Visual Basic, but
is different enough to be a separate language. It does
support forms, events, selection issues and access to
databases and file formats compatible with other applications
such as the DBASE/XBASE format and Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheets.
The only other group even close to this is the group for
Visual Basic, comp.lang.basic.visual, but as the focus of
that group is toward the Visual Basic language, many of the
ideas and concepts are useless for CA-Realizer since the
language is not identical.
I discovered that there is a significant difference when I
posted a question about this on the Visual Basic news group
that there would be very little in the way of help since high
volume of messages makes questions directly related to that
application would make questions about CA-Realizer hard to
notice.
Also, since Realizer comes in both OS/2 and Windows
applications, OS/2-related problems are outside the scope of
the Visual Basic newsgroup, since VB only runs under Windows.
But CA-Realizer creates applications that can be run on either
system and allows for the creation of .EXE applications not
requiring the original compiler.
Other Outlets:
There is a discussion group on CA-Realizer on Compuserve. That
group is supported by CA.
Status of Proposed Group:
The proposed group is proposed to be unmoderated.
I would - subject to there being a consensus that this is acceptable -
create this newsgroup within a couple of weeks.
Please refer further comments on this issue to the newsgroup alt.config
and/or to news.groups. Persons not having newsgroup posting capability may
mail comments to the following addresses:
alt.config.usenet@decwrl.dec.com
and / or

Thank you for your consideration.
