Where to get good documentation

I would like to write an application that is a background process that
places itself on the tray in the taskbar. Basically I would like a good
source for documentation for things like this. I program in C (not
C++), and I have done a lot in the unix environment, but nothing in
windows. I would like to save money, and I am using the free Borland
command line C compiler.

The microsoft web site was touting "Programming Windows, The Definitive
Guide to the Win32 API" by Charles Petzold. It got somewhat mixed
reviews on the amazon.com web site.

What do you guys think about this book? Will what it says also work for
the Borland C compiler? What other books are good? I don't want a
beginners book on programming. I want something like the Windows
equivalent of the excellent books that Richard Stevens wrote for Unix.
