A dll and a windows exe are nearly identical. So the next question is
which type 16 or 32 bit? They are different.

The answer is simply easy: I'm interested in both, whereas 32bit is
the more important.

16-bit EXE and DLL files use the "NE" format which can be displayed
using EXEHDR. 32-bit EXE and DLL files use "PE" format which can be
displayed by PEDUMP.

There is a sample on MSDN called YAHU which displays both and is
probably the about the best source of this information.

I tried EXEHDR and PEDUMP on my system, and neither of them does anything. I do
have something called TDUMP, though, which seems to be able to display
information about both of those file types. Do you suppose it's possible that
these are utilities that come with compilers? Nah, couldn't be...

Can't find it on my MSDN Level 1 CD. What for do I have to search for?
YAHU doesn't match.

From MSDN CD 12:

The YAHU sample application implements a generic and extensible .EXE
header utility with a few value-added functionalities, such as
run-time monitoring of Microsoft(R) Win32(R) applications.
For more information on YAHU, refer to the "YAHU, or Yet Another
Header Utility" technical article in the Microsoft Development
Library.
YAHU was built with Microsoft Visual C++(TM) version 2.0, and tested
under Microsoft Windows NT(TM) version 3.5.
KEYWORDS: CD11; debug API; DLL loading; executable file format;
process list

I get four hits on CD 12 with just YAHU entered.
