document icon troubles

I have an MFC app that creates several kinds of documents. Each of
these documents has a different file extension. Each of these
extensions are registered in the registry. The file type is then
registered, and a default icon is specified as being in the
executable, where all of my document icons are.

For example, under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, I have

.gci = GCK.Illustration

then,

GCK.Illustration
   DefaultIcon = "C:\Program Files\etc.",3

I think I've done everything right, but no matter what I put in the
DefaultIcon fields, every different kind of document has the same
icon. The icon that shows up is the application icon.

If I mess around with the registry, I can get these document types to
show document icons from other applications, but for some reason, my
document icons don't work.

I've examined the resources of the executable (the icons are there,
and in the correct order), the path name is correct, etc. Here is my
resource file:

APPICON ICON DISCARDABLE "APPICON.ICO"
IDR_GCC_ICON DISCARDABLE "GCKC.ICO"
IDR_GCI_ICON DISCARDABLE "GCKI.ICO"
MDIICON ICON DISCARDABLE "MDIICON.ICO"

I've tried #defining numeric values for IDR_GCC_ICON & IDR_GCI_ICON,
and I've tried it without numeric values defined. But nothing works.

Any ideas?
