Does anyone know what compression method MICROSOFT is using on the MS WINDOWS 3.11 setup disks? There are those who will say LZW, but I am not so sure. Here are some facts... 1) Any given 3.11 file (that has not changed between releases) is at least 10% smaller. For example calc.ex_ is 27999 kb on windows 3.10 and 25112 kb on windows 3.11. Obviously , the smaller file size allows Microsoft to place more files on less disks! 2) The DOS expand.exe program and the WINDOWS lzwexpand.dll have increased in size and functionality in 3.11 3) The new expand.exe will expand either flavor(3.10 and 3.11) of a given file, and the resulting file is identical. (This is also true of the new lzexpand.dll) 4) Microsoft does provide a COMPRESS.EXE with the windows SDK and professional VB, however it produces the more bulky 3.10 compression. 5) The Windows 3.10 compression is LZW. If anyone has any comments or helpful info, pass it along. I am very interested in creating smaller release disks myself. - Steve Scanzoni - Steve Scanzoni scanzoni@popsecret.sun.east.com
