How to replace/modify common file dialog ?

Hi !

Any ideas how to change the behavior of the common open/save file dialog

used by most Win 95/98/NT applications ? I don't want to change the
style of the file dialog of an application I have to write but e.g. the
file dialog you get when you open a file with WRITE.

Any suggestions ?

Herbert

Try GetOpenFileName and GetSaveFileName functions.

You can modify default Open/Save dialog behavior via setting several attributes in OPENFILENAME structure, you can also add custom dialog template (like dialog with preview as some graphics programs have) and more.

There is a really good example that explains how to
modify the common File dialog here.

http://www.codeguru.com/dialog/cmdlg.shtml

Thank you for your response, but: I'm want to modify the open/save dialog
system wide (and not only for my application), that means I have to deal with
Sub/superclassed windows or with SetWindowsHookEx (I assume). So simply
modifying the dialog as suggested in your response is not enough.

I sure as heck can't tell you exactly how to do it, but one alternative would
be to write your own COMMDLG.DLL and COMDLG32.DLL system files. (I think I got
the file names right!) I've got no idea if it's even doable, of course.

A trick I played with the mouse driver under Win3.X was to write my own mouse
driver, then have my driver load the original mouse driver for it to contribute
what it needed to. (I was writing a touchscreen driver for a system that was
also to have a mouse on it.) You could probably rename the original DLL files
and call them as needed.

Certainly not for the faint hearted, and I'm sure that this is something that
Microsoft would most heartily recommend against. For that matter, I sure do.
And if you were to sell me an application that did this, I would be most
mightily p.o.-ed.

So make sure that's what you want to do before you go doing it.
