Hi all,
I have a problem with the MFC Internet classes, or they have a problem
with me ;)
My problem concerns are the optional internet settings, more specifically
the proxy settings when using FTP, the MSDN documentation for the MFC
Internet classes and the Internet API, suggests there are two kinds of
proxy servers supported, TIS and CERN-proxies, in different situations:
"The Win32 Internet functions only recognize CERN type proxies (HTTP
only) and the TIS FTP gateway (FTP only). If Microsoft Internet Explorer
is installed, the Win32 Internet functions also support SOCKS proxies.
FTP and Gopher requests can be made through a CERN type proxy either by
changing them to an HTTP request." -MSDN "InternetOpen"
Unfortunately the CInternetSession documentation doesn't give much
information of the proxy options. The dwAccessTyppe of CInternetSession
only allows for specifing CERN proxy with "INTERNET_OPEN_TYPE_PROXY
Through CERN proxy.", otherwise you can specify INTERNET_OPEN_TYPE_DIRECT
Direct to Internet", or "INTERNET_OPEN_TYPE_PRECONFIG Preconfigured (in
the registry). This access type is set as the default."
When you can specify a CERN proxy (I believe that this is what Netscape
and IE supports as FTP proxies)how do you specify a TIS Proxy? Futher
more if I implicit specify a CERN proxy with INTERNET_OPEN_TYPE_PROXY I
have to supply a "pstrProxyName" which is "The name of the preferred CERN
proxy if dwAccessType is set as INTERNET_OPEN_TYPE_PROXY. The default is
NULL.", and should I then assume that FTP is not possible? If that is so,
how is it possible to connect with FTP through a proxy ? I am also unable
to figure out what "The name of the preferred CERN proxy" is. Is it a new
work adr. like the ip adr ? or a christian name or ? :)
How do I connect through a TIS Proxy? And if IE is installed how do I
connect through a Socks Proxy ?

Daniel W. Mathiasen

Hi, I think that if you use the default settings, the same settings of Internet Explorer (which should be the correct one, or why whould you use Internet Explorer if it doesn't work) are used. Meaning that if you are using multi-purpose Proxy (as configured in Internet Explorer, a.k.a SOCKS) it will be used in the CInternetSession and if you configured a FTP/WEB proxy, it will be used (again as its been setuped in IE). Sometimes this IE behavior is unwanted, and thats why you have option to do it manually. I haven't done it manually so I am unable to help you. -- Thanks Noam Rathaus Daniel W. Daniel, I also am confused by the WinInet handling of proxies. I'm using MFC to connect to an ftp site on the other side of a SOCKS proxy. But with on success. I've been using INTERNET_OPEN_TYPE_PRECONFIG in my CInternetSession constructor. I've tried setting the proxy configuration in both IE4 and manually in the registry, in several ways. The weird thing is that IE4 can access the ftp site, but my code can't! Daniel, what kind of proxy are you using? What different things have you tried? Have you made any progress? I would appreciate any information you could give me. Thanks, David Roussel. In article <MPG.1177d09a7314843798968b@news.tele.dk>, mathiasen.news@nospam.iname.com (Daniel W. Yes I know, I have had experiences where users have been sitting behind a proxy
and not being able to use my code, but the ftp program worked.

Not much... it seems to me the documentation is _very_ sparse and misleading, or
the code is not consistent... or both...
