You said "I didn't ask for anyone professional, that's why I am HERE."

He said was "No one would do this for less than several thousand dollars. No
one professional that is."

He in no way implied that nobody here wasn't a professions. Quite the
opposite, actually.

You, on the other hand, said the reason you were here is because you were
NOT looking for professionals.

Gary's decision on what to do and for what fee is his choice. Perhaps he
feels that proving everyone else wrong (about how tough it is) is sufficient
reward. I can see that. Or maybe he thinks it IS tough, but finds it an
interesting bit of work, and that's sufficient. Or any other reason not
motivated by monitary gain. It doesn't make him unprofessional, it just
means his motive isn't material profit.

No. You did, however, make it clear that you wanted inexpensive. And
provided no reason why one of us would want to forgo making money for our
efforts. If we assumed, for example, that the author of your program was a
crackerjack graphics wizard, and managed to whomp up a program satisfying
all your requirement in, say, 10 hours. If that "someone" is me (it's not,
my speciality isn't graphics), you're out $1000 for my time. So, what would
intice me to do the job for, say, $100? Gary obviously has a motive, and
it's his business what that is.

I just went back and re-read Jim's message. I read his response as being in
reference to those "gracious" people who provided you with your previous
failure to get your graphics utility.

Even if he DID mean what you say he did, that still isn't 'elitist.' At
worst, he didn't properly allow for folks like Gary who have other reasons
for doing such a job.
