Running out of memory can anyone advise?

My computer has Windows 3.1, 16Mb of ram, about 70 Mb of unused hard
drive and I've used Memmaker to try and manage the memory.
When I run PhotoFinish to produce gifs or when I am on the www (using
Turnpike software including Netscape) for any length of time I seem to
run out of memory. Can anyone suggest why and how it can be corrected.
If I run MEM at the Dos prompt before starting WindowsI have 13.5 Mb of
memory free in total. 12.9Mb is XMS. When I start windows, I am left
with only 1.5Mb in total and only 1024BYTES of XMS. My conclusion is
that windows is somehow eating up the meoory. But how can there be so
much "resident" just by running windows?
Can anyone help?

Try editing the default.pif file I think it has a default of 1Mb XMS

Try "Fix1MB" by Matt Pietrek - CIS: 71774,362
It fixed most of my memory problems.

Or more specifically, dosprmpt.pif. On the first page, change
any 1024s to -1s.

With 16Mb of RAM try Windows95. With Netscape, Hotdog, PaintShop Pro and
other WWW utilities all running - out of memory problems, crashes etc
seem to have been banished to history.

pif files only affect the amount of memory allocated to MSDOS programmes
not Turnpike and other Windows programmes.

Out of memory errors in Windows generally come from one of 3 sources -

1. Programme bugs which fail to free memory used.
2. Manipulating large images.
3. Memory fragmentation where programmes grab the biggest bit of
memory, use part of it and free the rest resulting in ever
smaller amounts of memory available for use next time.

The only answer to 1 and 3 is to close Windows down and restart, for
problem 2 you need more memory.

As this is off topic in demon.ip.support I have copied and set
follow-ups to demon.ip.support.turnpike where someone may have a specific
insight into your problems.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I still have some problems but I learned
a heck of a lot about memory management through this. I learned that
memory management is not as reliable as it might be and throwing extra
RAM at it will not necessarily cure the problem. I also found a piece of
software (Winmiser) which has helped but not cured the problem. I may
just purchase WinMiser Pro which sounds even better. (I do not work for
the company which produces these programs, but maybe they will send me a
freebie after this plug :)
I may still have to resort to re-formatting my HDD and starting again if
it doesn't cure the problem. Many Tanks to everyone and sorry if I
posted my original message in the wrong group.
