Delete Sentry not recognised under Win 3.11

I have delete sentry enabled under DOS (undelete /sc /sd /se),
but Windows appears only partially aware of it.

File Manager reports that it's enabled, and allows me to use
it to undelete files, but it reports free space not as the totaL
reported by DOS, but as DOS_TOTAL - SIZE-OF_SENTRY_FILES.

Applications appear to receive the same view of free space,
with the result that I often can't write to a particular drive
unless I've run undelete /purgec (or purgef or whatever)
from DOS before starting Win. If I don't do this, I'm either
told that there's not enough space on a given drive, or I
find that downloads bomb out with a disk full error.

Can anyone suggest a workaround?
