Can anyone help a mate who has just killed his system: He has installed a new motherboard (Intel VX I think), Cyrix 200Mhz CPU and new RAM (32Mb). His system will now only partially reload windows95, stopping whilst the login pictures are flicking up and down, with a Windows protection error. I though it might be a vxd problem. Either way, what is the problem, and how should he fix it? Thanks. -- Andrew Brydon Life is just the beta-version of death

If he's using an oldish PCI SVGA card, try using a recent one, at least temporarily. It seems that there's a conflict between the old device drivers (for the old motherboard) with the new mother board. Boot Win95 into safe mode. Go to Control Panel/System. Under Device Manager, open System Devices, and remove the PCI bus. And reboot. Win95 will detect everything again. Remember to have the CD-ROM driver loaded in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, otherwise you will not be able to use the CD-ROM while Win95 detecting the new hardware and try to get the driver (if they're on CD). Also have all the driver ready either on floppy, hard drive or CD-ROM. Thanks to those who emailed. It appears one vital piece of information was missing from the above description: he was over-clocking the 200 at 233Mhz.....! By running it at the correct speed all the problems go away. :) C'est la guerre. Thanks again for those who replied. -- Andrew Brydon Life is just the beta-version of death
