I would start by checking to make sure that you don't have a DMA
conflict, although it's not as likely to cause the HD going out, but with
the problem with the floppy, this is a hi probability. The likely culprit
is either a sound card or a CD-Rom card having a DMA channel that is set
to one which by default is what the A drive will use.

Sounds like your MB is bad. I had similar problems with one and a new
(different brand) MB solved it. ( I live too far away from the dealer to
chance trying the same brand MB)

Regarding James' reply...

The floppy drive does not use DMA 1. Here is a list of common IRQ and DMA
usage in most PC implementations:

IRQ 0: Timer 0
IRQ 1: Keyboard
IRQ 2: Cascadable interupt from slave 8259 interupt controller
IRQ 3: COM port 2
IRQ 4: COM port 1
IRQ 5: LPT2 (if installed)
IRQ 6: Floppy disk controller
IRQ 7: LPT1
IRQ 8: CMOS real time clock
IRQ 9: Free (emulates IRQ2 for XT compatibility via BIOS)
IRQ 10: Free
IRQ 11: Free
IRQ 12: PS2 Mouse (if installed)
IRQ 13: Numeric coprocessor
IRQ 14: IDE Hard disk controller
IRQ 15: IDE Hard disk controller (if installed)

DMA 0: Free
DMA 1: Free (typically used by sound cards)
DMA 2: Floppy disk controller
DMA 3: Free (typically used by ECP port)
DMA 4: Cascadable DMA from primary 8237 DMA controller
DMA 5: Free (typically used by 16bit sound cards)
DMA 6: Free
DMA 7: Free

If anyone can update this list, please do so.

Please check your system devices in WIN95 and report any "!" exclamation
marks.
Does your hard drive and floppy work fine if you boot to command prompt via
the F8 key?

You might check into a BIOS upgrade, this is fairly simple if you have a
flash BIOS - which you should if its a new MB - this has cured numerous
funky problems for me in the past (I'm an independent consultant).
Asus's web address is http://www.asus.com/ and they have spec. sheets
and BIOS upgrades for your P/1 P55T2P4 motherboard (check the version
and BIOS date of your board (upon bootup) to see if their upgrade is a
later version/date). If the upgrade doesn't work, the MB is probably
defective.

I hope you know how to get into the bios setup. Once there load the bios
default settings and then save and exit. If this does not solve the
problem, then it is your motherboard that is defective.

Helpful hint. The first time you use a new motherboard you should set the
bios to the setup default settings. Then change them to the bios default.
If you really know what you are doing, then you can change them anyway you
want.
