Just when you think things are running smooth. I have no idea how I did it but Win 95 is running all HD and CD-ROM in compatibility mode. It is not related to Autoexec or Config as I checked it all. Even booted with a two-line config, files & buffers and only a path statement in Autoexec. BUT!!! My hard drive show yellow in System Manager I don't recall the entries saying this before but it now reads: Hard disk controllers CMD PCI-0640 PCI to IDE Controller Primary IDE controller (single fifo) Secondary IDE controller (single fifo) Any help out there?? Thanks dj

Make sure your CD-ROM drive is not on the same chain as the Hard Drive. Win95 goes into compatibility if anything "gets between" it's drivers and the hardware (from what I can tell). I have had this problem and after all else, I did a virus scan and found the Form virus. Ok, if it's not a virus, which I don't think it is, here are two proposed solutions, I would like to know WHICH one of them works. The first: Look at Q151911 in the Microsoft Knowledge base, (www.microsoft.com/kb) and delete the NOIDE entry from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\SERVICES\VXD\IOS Registry key. Then reboot Windows95 and see if that solves the problem. You have a CMD controller, so that is right on the money. This should work. IF IT DOESN'T, TRY THIS: Get a copy of the WIn95 CD-ROM. In the \drivers\system\pci folder there is a PCIIDE.VXD file. Copy it to the hard drive somewhere easy to get at later (like c:\). Boot into Safe Mode (very important) by pressing F8 at the Starting Windows95...blurb at the beginning of the boot procedure. Then select safe mode. In safe mode, remove all of the Hard Disk Controllers from the device manager (control panel:system). Then, rename the pci.vxd in the \[windows]\system directory to pci.old. Then copy the pciide.vxd into the \[windows]\system folder, BUT RENAME IT to PCI.VXD. Reboot in normal mode. It will probably take a few boots to re-detect all of the hardware. -Rog2 Joel Hopper <hopper@flash.net> wrote in article <01bb9b2a$132145e0$80010b0a@joeldesktop.teknowlogy.com>... Could be a virus. there is a technote on this at microsoft.com, but don't remember the number. do a registry search for "noide" and delete that value from the registry. restart and see if it fixes your problem. if not, search ms knowledge base for the keywords "noide, cmd" Dave Quecke <djQuecke@worldnet.att.net> wrote in article <MPLANET.322d2d94djQuecke989684@netnews.worldnet.att.net>... > Just when you think things are running smooth. > > I have no idea how I did it but Win 95 is running all HD and CD-ROM in > compatibility mode.
