Modem in a Compaq PC

I have just donated my old 14.4 semi-branded voice modem to
a relative, but we are having big-time problems trying to get
his Win95 to configure it.

The Win95 wizards go through and find the modem, but insist on
planting it on COM1, which seems to be clashing with something.

Or it could be failing to remove the "serial port" pseudo-hardware.

It is a Harmony modem, with a Sierra chipset. There aren't any
visible jumpers, for selecting COM port.

Does anyone know how me might get through this?

I'm willing to bet that you have a serial mouse on that system.
They normally live on Com1 and won't share the "mousehole".
You need to configure the modem to Com2. You should be offered this
option as part of the modem setup. If not, you can change it after in
modem Properties. If you have any other kit running on serial ports, you
need to be aware that ports 1 & 3 and 2 & 4 are each paired to share
resources (ie, IRQ - DMA). In that case you will need to figure out
which devices will tolerate each other - many will not.

It appears to be a PS2 mouse. Within MyComputer/Properties, the clashes
appear to be with Ports sub-section, rather than the Mice.
We tried installing on COM2, but there was no difference. The biggest
problem is that the clash is detected during start-up, just after the
BIOS RAM check, and requires a key-press to continue start-up!

Hmmmm. Well, Compaq systems are unique, as are the proprietary
components that are installed with them. Compaq (actually AT&T
Microsystems under contract) made several variations of the Compaq 144
"High Speed" Data/Fax/Voice and SpeedPaq modems. The modem worked in
close relation with the ESS 688 Audiodrive component (sometimes called
the Compaq Modem Audio) which is actually located on the motherboard and
not on the modem itself.

These components were usually lashed together by a software suite called
MediaPilot which, in turn, consisted of the Compaq Operator (Telephone
Answering-TAM, FAX Centre and Speakerphone functions) plus the
MultiMedia Centre (CD Player, Wav Player/editor, etc). I'm not sure of
the degree to which all these components are unique to the Compaq system
for which they are designed and whether transplanting part of the
related hardware to another, different, system would result in necessary
proprietary elements being missing. Equally, there is a possibility that
the internal modem slot on your Compaq is not a bog standard 16 bit ISA
slot, but may have a unique contact/pin arrangement for that modem
which, of course, may not be present in another system. Certainly Compaq
is infamous for doing that sort of thing and, if so, it is possible that
this may be causing some of configuration problems you are encountering.

Nevertheless, hoping for the best that it's a straight resource
configuration problem, I've gone back in my old notes and found the
following factory settings for the Compaq 144 modem (I physically de-
installed my internal modem some time ago):

* IRQ 03, IO 02F8h-02FFh, the modem usually uses the standard software
configured port COM 2 (Address 2F8)

Finally, I presume that you used the Select Driver from Manufacturers
list option when you had Win95 install the modem. Under Compaq there are
a number of modems listed, some of which are annotated "enhanced port".
You may wish to try configuring under one of the the alternate
configurations.

Hope this helps.
