Hi I have big problem - my computer running Windows 95osr 2 version B crashed and on restart the auto scan disk ran - I deleted some messed up files and actually they were important. Then when I went into Win95 I connected to the internet and then tried to open a Netscape browser 4.5 and the message came up with 'can not find wsock.dll' Then it said I should restart my computer - that I did , then the computer came up with a message saying that 2 files were deleted 1. Javasup .. something and 2. ndis.drv or something It then said can not find or load mouse.drv and that my system.ini points to it. It then said reinstall windows... Problem I now only have Windows 95 original and no version 2. Also I can not reformat to erase all data on my harddrive since I have important study, work and recent web site files that have not yet been backed up. What can I do, I am using my handheld pc to write this email as the only email device I have left. Can I buy a new harddrive format that with a new purchased Win 95 Osr 2 and get the computer up and running and then install my old harddrive as a primary slave drive and then copy over my important data? If I did a reinstall with a reformat will all my files be there? I have a start up disk for this computer that I created along time ago for this computer. Is this of any use? I only have a Iomega zip disk version of Win 95 OSR 2 can this be used with the Guest driver and ms-dos drivers for my zip drive? If I can extract a mouse.drv from a cab file on my zip disk version - in which cab file is it in? Excuse the cross posting but I need access to my web site files on my computer for continual updates of my entertainment site as well as work related stuff. Please I need help fast and I will be very grateful for any help that goes my way ----------------------------------------- Using bMobile news 3.0 for Cassiopeia A-11A http://members.xoom.com/singloon/index.htm http://members.xoom.com/singloon/entertainment.htm - for movie in 1999, 2000, 2001

Yes. It would be safest to do the install with the original drive not even plugged into the system, get the new Win9x up and working well and then put the original drive back in as a slave and copy off the stuff that matters. You might want to consider Win98 instead of OSR2, it will do that just as well, and has some useful enhancements over OSR2 too. > If I did a reinstall with a reformat will all my files be there? Not sure what you mean here, whether you are asking about say just buying a copy of OSR2 without a new hard drive, using that to install over the current hard drive. You certainly dont want to do a reformat in that situation, that will certainly lose the data you want to keep. You want to bear in mind that you may well have a problem with the original hard drive, the one that caused the original crash. Corse it could be somewhere other than the hard drive too. Certainly the safest thing for your data is to buy a new hard drive and a FAT32 capable version of Win9x and attempt a clean install on the new drive with the original drive removed, and make sure that that is all working well before you put the original drive back in the system to copy the data off that is important. And important to be very careful, you dont get many chances. > I have a start up disk for this computer that I created > along time ago for this computer. Is this of any use? Depends on how long ago. If it was before the OSR2 install, no real use if the drive is formatted FAT32. And even if you can boot off the floppy and see the hard drive, its taking a lot more risk with your data when you dont know what caused the original failure. Only you can say how important that data is. A decent sized drive only costs a coupla hundred bucks, and you can always sell it once you have got the original back if you really need the money. > I only have a Iomega zip disk version of Win 95 OSR 2 can this > be used with the Guest driver and ms-dos drivers for my zip drive? Again, some of that stuff is feasible, but at considerable risk to the data you want. > If I can extract a mouse.drv from a cab file on > my zip disk version - in which cab file is it in? The problem is much more serious than that.

I always do a complete reinstall if/when Win 95 or 98 starts playing silly buggars. If you do a fresh install with a re-format, then you are going to lose all exisitng data on the reformatted drive/partition. I would suggenst that you boot up you machine in either safe mode, i.e. hit the F8 key just before Win 95 starts loading and choose safe mode. If this doesn't work, then boot up in Dos mode, again this can be chosen from the F8 menu before Win 95 starts to load. if this doesn't worj then try booting from your resue disk that you say you have. Once you have access to the data on your drive, then you should backup every data file that you cannot bear to lose. I suggest a backup of the My Documents folder. Copy the favourites folder to preserve your browser bookmarks. Take a wander through you Program Files folder to see what apps are there, and where they may store their data files and back those up too. Once you are sure you can stand losing the remaining data on the C drive, then you can either attempt to re-install windows over the exisitng windows setup, (make sure you choose to replace any newer files on your drive with the older ones on your Win 95 install media). You may get lucky and get back a reasonably stable system and most of you old apps will function as if nothing happened, and there is nothing more to do However, if this produces a system that is not as stable as you would like, then give the system a good clean out. Reformat the drive and do a clean install. Reinstall the apps and then replace the backed up files and folders and whoilla, you should have you system back. Hope this helps. P.S Make sure you backup your email and news data files. Please I need help fast and I will be very grateful for any help :that goes my way You could try replacing those files from the Win95 CD. Use the same process for your Zip Disk cab files. If you can access your CD from a Dos startup disk or F8 Dos you can extract them. Get the mouse.drv first. From Dos get into the Win95 directory on the CD and enter: extract /a win95_02.cab mouse.drv /L C:\windows\system That command will search all *.cab files starting with cab #2 in sequential order and extract mouse.drv to the windows\system directory. Reboot and you may have the mouse. Check the Wsock.dll file name again then use this to get it. Insert the correct name. extract /a win95_02.cab wsock.dll /L C:\windows\system If you do get it you may be able to get on the net with your browser. To search all cab files for a file but not extract get into the directory that has the cab files and enter: extract /a /d win95_02.cab Myfile.exe |more Replace Myfile.exe with the file you want. If you have a Windows\sysbckup directory you can use TweakUI to restore damaged or missing system files, under Repair tab. The Wsock??.dll file should be in this directory. If so just copy it to the Windows directory. You will lose everything by formatting. If none of this gets you back in business I would get the Win98 Upgrade CD and install it from Dos (run Setup.exe). IMHO it's far superior to Win95b. The Upgrade from Dos will give you the Custom Menu from where you can either Upgrade or do a "clean" install. All your settings should be preserved. They were for me. Running Setup from Windows starts copying files right away with no options, so be careful. Post if you need more help. You may have to reinstall...but be prepared that it may stuff up everything, and you well may have to format and reinstall from scratch. In that situation, I usually connect it to another H/D and carry the things I need across (just in case). Prior to trying the reinstall. You could if you have a large H/D do an install to a different directory say windoze 95 or 98. This will save you losing all your info.
