Hi there ! Due to an overwritten file I decided to re-install Windows 95 completely (beginning with DOS and Windows 3.1 after formatting the HDD with DOS 6.2). I work with the GERMAN version of Windows 95, which - however - should not matter here. Upon installing Windows 95 from the original setup CD (after successfully having installed DOS 6.2 and Windows 3.1) I got the following error message from Windows 95 after the initial brief hardware check: "SUWIN caused Segment Load Failure in Module suwin.exe at 0002:5E0F" This message is desplayed in a 'generic' Windows 3.1 message box. Every time I try to re-install Win95 I get the same error msg including the same segment address ! (In the original German version the message reads: "SUWIN verursachte einen Segment-Lade-Fehler in Modul SUWIN.EXE an Adresse 0002:5E0F" As I saw the same error message from a desperate user, who posted into the newsgroups - without having his mail answered so far - I was able to give the CORRECT English translation of that message above.) Note: The system I installed Win95 SUCCESSFULLY before is an old 386/40 machine with a Quantum 253 MB HDD, 8 MB RAM, a Tseng ET4000 card and a Sony CDU76E CDROM drive. Don't say, 'Buy yourself a new machine.'. I have a brand new Pentium PC myself. The PC I am getting mad with is a machine for a school class. Unfortunately they cannot afford a better one at the moment. Questions: (1) What is the function of SUWIN ? (2) By what is a 'Segment Load Error' caused and what else can be at address 0002:5E0F ? (3) Obviously at least one other desperate guy got this error at exactly the same segment address (0002:5E0F); as his e-mail address is obviously not correct, I couldn't ask him if he already found a solution. (4) When I first (and successfully) installed Win95 on that machine I used an external CDROM drive connected to the parallel port. When I had to re-install Windows95 I had inserted an internal drive meanwhile. Do you think the drive (connected to the same cable as the HDD) or the driver (V 2.73 from Sony) might have caused all the trouble ? (5) What can I do to install Windows95 properly ? 20 school-children are waiting and my nerves are almost gone ! Please HELP ! P.S. The MS Knowledge Base is of no help. Please send me your replies by e-mail ! Sincerely Gerhard Landauf (AUSTRIA)

there are number of possible causes for this error. Few of those are:
Your WIndows3.x has more than 1200 fonts installed
Your memory management software is incorrectly configured.
Your computer has a GSI BIOS.
Double-buffering is required for your hard disk, but it is not enabled.
You have a Cirrus Logic video card driver installed that is incompatible
with the Windows 95 Setup program.
There is an anti-virus setting enabled in your computer's CMOS
There's not enough space for the temp directory
You're using Netsetup with Workgroup Add-On for MS-DOS systems
configured to use the basic network redirector

The SUWIN means SetUp Windows, that is the window will display while you are installing or setting up Windows 95, its function is to tell you how to continue the next step of installing or provide some useful information. So, I solve the problem just to turn off the external cache of the mainboard BIOS, after turning the external cache off, everything seems going smooth. What I suggest is to turn off the cache in your BIOS while installing and try. Maybe the problem is caused by other sources, just try.

Gerhard Landauf, When you run Win95's setup have your system set to VGA resolution, 640x480, and use the standard Win3.x drivers. Then when Win95's setup displays the hardware list set it to a VGA video card and monitor. The setup should go in then and you can change these after Win95 is up and running. Also if you can it would be best to just do a clean install of Win95 with an empty formatted HDD. Later. If you have decided to reinstall due to a corrupt file, prehaps you
could try extracting the original file from the installation CAB files
and copy the extracted file over your suspected corrupt one. This might
save you from reinstalling.
Type EXTRACT at the DOS prompt for an explanation of the syntax.
