HELP! Powermanagement is screwing me...

Hi to all of you,

I never posted a message in this forum so I might be wrong regarding
the interest of the group. If so,please do apologize me.I won't post
any such alike message again then.
Anyway here's the thing:

I'm using Win95(latest Dutch version on AMD-K6-2/350) and when I put a
certain
amount of time in the section powermanagement of the controlpanel after
witch Windows should go into standby for low energy usage it does so but
after some(2-3)minutes the system activates itself again, then after
the specified time goes back into standby, reactivates itselfs
again...this goes on like this continuously.Rather annoying when working
on such a PC.Certainly if this PC is in the same room you sleep in.I
can't shut down my PC since I need my voice,fax,data-modem(SuperVoice
2.2f 33600bps)to answer incoming call's/faxes.It's not the modem causing
this problem(on com2).It does the same thing when I shut down the
modem. So then there are no programs running in the background and I also
deleted the indexing in 'fast find' of Office97.Not letting Windows
manage the power and make the settings in my Bios(Award Modular Bios
v4.51PG) neither solves the problem.Disabling all wake up events and all
PM-timers doesn't do it.
Anyone an idea what might cause this problem and how to solve it once
and for all?I'd appreciate it very much...
P.S.:I have no screensaver enabled.

Thanks!!!
Karel.

You could try Win98, caz it has lots of bug fixes.

Or you could get the new 3Com USRobotics 56K modem which can get faxes even
when offline

All these cause money, except for the first one where you can err . .

I had to reinstall Win95(A version) since Win98 caused my PC so much
problems that I couldn't do else.
And as to the modem, this isn't the problem.I tried this by closing
it,even shutting down the powerswitch of the modem.
Even after pressing CTRL+Alt+DEL and shutting down all app's running in
the dialogbox that then appears exept for Eplorer the problem still
persists.
Any other explanation, maybe?Hardware(doubtfully, since I never changed
anything before the problem occured for the first time),some run in
win.ini...I really don't know.

Anyway thanks for your quick reply upon my helprequest,
Karel.

pressing CRTL+ALT+DEL --> closed every app only not Explorer and still
there is something writing to my disk, witch you can hear
too, besides). It's this annoying soud of writing know and then to the HD
that' really bothering me when I keep the PC running in the active mode
without touching anything...

Anyway,thanks for the reply,Stsoh !

Best regards,
Karel.

You didn't understand me quite well.

I said the modem, 3Com USRobotics 56K latest modem, can get faxes when YOUR
computer is switched OFF. But it costs a bomb.

I did understand what you said. But I was trying to get the problem fixed
without having to buy new hardware. And the modem you mention really
costs a lot...

Yes,I did many times before(Norton,Mcafe,TBAV)but since I never had a
virus on my PC I didn't reinstall any of them yet.

It would be worth getting hold of Startup Manager. It must (I
think) be that there is a running process that wakes up at intervals.
 SM will list (almost) everything that is being started at boot-time;
including many which do not figure in either the StartUp window or the
Ctrl-Alt-Del lists. If it's not starting at boot, then check the
 scheduler (if activated).

Or put the m/c in a soundproof cupboard .....

I once had this same problem, and if my memory doesn't fail me, the
solution for me was that I unchecked the "Sync data transfer" for CDRom
(in Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> CDROM -> [Name] ->
Properties -> Settings). The hard disk has been nice and quiet since
then :-). I don't know how important flag that one is, but if you have
it checked, try to uncheck it - trying won't hurt anyway...

I checked this one...but the "Sync data transfer" was unchecked
already...

Thanks anyway for trying to help me out here.
