Configuring memory

Fellow netters

I have a group of users that want to use both Windows 3.1 and Lotus 1-2-3 for
DOS 3.1 on 486/33 PCs with 12MB memory. Reading from the Lotus documentation,
Windows is unable to use the extended memory provided by EMM386 as the NOEMS
switch can't be used with Lotus. My question is this:

1) Is there anyway to provide EXTended memory to Lotus using EMM386 and have
that same memory available to Windows at the same time (not the AUTO
switch), I want the full 12MB available for Windows if Lotus isn't run and
I want the remaining if Lotus is run from Windows.
2) Would QEMM give me this functionality? If so, does such a thing as QEMM 486
exist or is QEMM 386 used on 486 PCs?

Many thanks in anticipation
of your assistance,

Lotus 123 r3.x supports VCPI, which means that it can access memory provided
by Windows.. IF it's run from within windows.
If you want to run Lotus 123 r3.x from OUTSIDE of windows, you're going to have
to configure some EMS, by either giving a parameter to EMM386 (this then
stops that amount from working as XMS for windows), or by using a better
memory manager such as QEMM386.
QEMM allows both XMS and EMS access to the same areas of memory, and
provides the amount you need on demand. It also does some very clever things
with the upper memory area between 640k and 1Mb.

In terms of money, you can either splash out on buying QEMM, or you could
upgrade to Lotus 123 for windows, or just put up with having to run lotus from
within windows.

EXTended (XMS) is provided by himem.sys so you probably mean EXPanded (EMS)
memory. This can be provided by EMM386 or by Windows in enhanced mode. Also,
if i am correct, the EMM386.EXE provided with DOS 6.0 uses a common memory
pool for both EMS and XMS, thus providing EMS on demand.

Windows provides (in enhanced mode at least) DPMI memory and not VCPI.

Check out DOS 6 but DON'T take DoubleSpace in use!

Cleaver things that cleaver people can do with EMM386 I-switches as well!

Upgrading to a newer version seems like the best idea to me.
