I had this problem a couple of weeks ago (unknown cause ... but probably
twiddling with something I shouldn't have been, like you ;-} ). I just
used file manager to rename "Program Files" to "Programs" and then
renamed it back to "Program Files". Cleared it right up.

OK, now what are you going to do with all the registry and parameter file
entries, and the shortcut files that point to progra~2?

Hopefully, as in my case, the effects of the original error are
immediately apparent and you fix it before you accumulate any spurious
"PROGRA~2" references. If not, then you've got a real mess (probably
requiring mass editing of the registry or restoration from a backup). In
my case, Norton Utilities was the only software (I think) that used the
"PROGRA~1" reference instead of the full long filename and the problem
was immediately apparent upon rebooting the machine (lots of "couldn't
find .dll ..." and "couldn't find file ..." errors).

However, this is kind of an insidious error that isn't immediately
apparent and can lead to a totally botched registry if not promptly
rectified.

Rename progra~2 to something short like cheesey

Rename cheesey to program files. Eg:

ren progra~2 cheesey
ren cheesey "Program files"

There are a few free utilities you can use to change Registry entries
and/or *.ini and *.lnk files. I recommend "coa32.exe" and "regsearch.exe".
You can find both on any freeware or shareware site. My suggestion: Rename
all folders with long file names (or file names with a <space> in it) in
short names, e.g.: "program files" in "Programs". Then run one of the two
mentioned utilities and all your problems are gone.

My killfile rejects all items posted to 6 or more newsgroups (a practice
which is almost never justified). (If anyone wants to emulate me, the
exact syntax is platform-dependent, but something like
"Newsgroups: *,*,*,*,*,*", where the "*" is a wildcard which matches any
word.)

I have noticed that most off-topic postings to demon.ip.support.win95 (disw),
a newsgroup for support by Demon Internet Ltd of customers with Internet
Provider-related problems on Win95 equipment, are cross-posted to a large
number of newsgroups.

Cross-posted and off-topic messages might diminish if nobody responded to
them.

I'll only see any responses to this message if it's posted to d.i.s.w. and
not more than 4 other newsgroups.

Best wishes,

One has to edit the Registry
Search for c:\progra~1
and Replace.

There is a verry good shareware program to do this:
Registry Search and Replace
It should be available at www.iserv.net/~shjswdev

Similar chnage will have to be made in the
in WIN.INI.
Otherwise the old name will be entered in the registry everyy time
Windows is launched.

Firstly, DON'T do this in the GUI, Win95 may have hissy fits about
registered applications etc.

Secondly, DON'T do it in DOS, as DOS won't track the LFN, i.e the LFN
may no longer be associated correctly.

Thirdly, before trying this in exclusive DOS mode, test it first by
creating a directory NOT in C:\ called "Program Files", retracing your
steps to re-create the problem, then rename the 8.3 under your final
"Program Files" from PROGRA~2 to PROGRA~1, and see if it is still
accessable as "Program Files" in the GUI.

If so, may be safe to proceed.

RegEdit, Find "PROGRA~2", edit to "PROGRA~1".
Similar in afflicted sortcuts.
Similar in any 16-bit Windows app .ini files, or other refs.

May be do-able, but may never regain 100% confidence. If it was a new
system I was setting up for someone else, I'd bite the bullet and
start over; if it was my own production machine (gnarled and callussed
as it is from years of hard work) I'd hack it - but log every step of
the way (ballpoint and paper log)

Something does not quite smell right here. First, W95 generates 8.3
names from LFNs by squeezing out spaces, truncating to 6 characters
and appending the ~n where n is a sequence number. Thus, if you have a
progra~2 it's because you have some folder name which begings with
"progra" which appears before "Program Files". I've seen a way to
change the default 8.3 mangling scheme but I can't locate it just now.
Sounds to me like a bit more research is in order here before someone
does some real damage to their system.

I did this too and it would work for a while but what would happen is I
would have to reinstall some of the prgrams and they would set up the
progra~2 again, I spent a couple of weeks trying to straighten it , like I
say deltree.

The Reason it works is because the dir becomes 8.3 format and then is
changed back and since there is no other dir named the same it changes it
to PROGRA~1
PS: Windows 95 does not I think remember old changed files as otherwise if
u changed them in an old Dos it would muck everything up.

The Reason it works is because the dir becomes 8.3 format and then is changed back and since there is no other dir named the same it changes it to PROGRA~1
PS: Windows 95 does not I think remember old changed files as otherwise if u changed them in an old Dos it would muck everything up.
