Dial-up and LAN connections simultaneously
#970

I'm having considerable difficulty setting up Win95 (using its own
TCP/IP stack) to talk sensibly to the internet service provider
(demon) and to my LAN.

I have got as far as being able to ping both through both dials-up and
ethernet interfaces, but I can't do much more than that. I have set up
separate IP addresses (using the 192.168.*.* address range for my
LAN), and have tried all combinations of DNS server cpmfigurations,
but I cannot Telnet or ftp on my LAN. I suspect the problem has to do
with domain names and DNS servers.

Any clus as to how I can get the PC to either:

a) recognise the DNS on both demon adn the LAN

or

b) set up a permanent hosts file (equivalent to unix /etc/hosts) so I
don't need to use DNS on the LAN.

Thanks,

Me too. (Sorry.)

The only way I can make it work is to change my permanent TCP/IP DNS
settings, and then reboot. Then when I want to go back to using the
LAN, I have to change and reboot again. Not acceptable.

If I put my LAN as primary DNS and my dial-up as secondary, it fails.

If I set up special DNS for my dial-up connection, it doesn't use them,
even if (as documented in the lame on-line help) I uncheck the requisite
two boxes. This is a blatant bug IMO.

Anybody solved this yet? It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't have to
reboot every time you switched DNS settings, because then a program could
be written to do it on the fly.
