Here's a trivial, yet very, very useful application of describe and alias in 4DOS. When adding files to monolithic directories that store files from many unrelated products, such as the many unrelated drivers that are stored in the MS-Windows system directory, be sure to use describe to attach some common descriptive label onto each driver. For example, my monitor driver copies over many files into the system directory, and I used the 4DOS describe command to attach this label to each one: For Taxan 1901 Now here's the neat part: define an alias - I call mine 'show' - that lets you filter out just the drivers you are interested in seeing. show is defined as follows: show if NOT .%1==. dir /o:i | egrep -i "%1" //note: the above assumes you have an egrep or grep program //on your system...it's not part of 4DOS Now whenever I need to do maintenance on my system drivers I can go to that directory and type: show taxan And the output I see is something like this: coure.fon 21360 2-27-91 17:01 For Taxan 1901 cti-lgo.old 976 5-01-90 3:00 For Taxan 1901 cti-rle.old 11518 5-01-90 3:00 For Taxan 1901 cti.gr2 2255 2-04-92 14:54 For Taxan 1901 cti40.fon 12800 9-23-91 13:34 For Taxan 1901 cti80.fon 6496 9-23-91 13:34 For Taxan 1901 ctiat.lgo 976 5-01-90 3:00 For Taxan 1901 helve.fon 59696 2-27-91 17:01 For Taxan 1901 small.drv 86784 2-10-92 10:38 For Taxan 1901 small.gr3 11776 2-06-92 17:56 For Taxan 1901 symbole.fon 39948 2-27-91 17:01 For Taxan 1901 tmsre.fon 53520 2-27-91 17:01 For Taxan 1901 vddcti.386 24327 2-10-92 11:09 For Taxan 1901 vgafix.fon 5776 2-27-91 17:01 For Taxan 1901 vgaoem.fon 5584 2-27-91 17:01 For Taxan 1901 vgasys.fon 6368 2-27-91 17:01 For Taxan 1901 cti.rle 11518 5-01-90 3:00 For Taxan 1901 (default Hercules also) herclogo.rle 15808 3-01-92 3:10 For Taxan 1901 (default Hercules also) This sure beats the hell out of having to parse through over 100 files by hand, referring back to some written documentation to see which files related to my driver are already in that directory. This combination of describe with the alias is routinely saving me a ton of time. You gotta love 4DOS! -- Will Estes Internet: westes@netcom.com
