Ummm -- not quite. While Oberon *was* designed for the Ceres workstation,
there *is* (was?) a version of the system for 386's that runs from the
dos prompt. I got it from neptune.ethz.ch in one of the subdirectories
of /Oberon.
Looking there now, I see that there appears to be a new version in the
file /Oberon/DOS386/system.exe. There is a readme.text file in the same
directory.
From the reports I've read on them, Oberon and Oberon-2 seem fairly elegant
languages (and I liked the decision to remove the "FROM file IMPORT thing;"
construct (I never used it in Modula-2 anyway)), but for some reason I took
an intense dislike to the system with its peculiar notion of windowing
(is this what plan9 has?) and never worked out how to proceed once I'd
closed all open windows on the screen. Maybe it would have grown on me if
I'd given it more time.
