We no longer have a manual nor an expert in older DOS software, can anyone help? In MS Word for DOS, version 5.5... How does one type the accented characters, particularly the vowels with accents and umlauts, as used in German?

I never used this version, but all the PC have this particularity :
lock your numeric keypad to num ('NumLock' on ENglish keyboard)
press down the 'ALT' key and without releasing it, type a 3 digit number (say
/1/3/3/ on the numeric keypad
When you release the 'ALT' key, a stange character apprears ('`' in this case).
Play with it, you should find what you need
This should work with any SW which manages properly the keyboard.
