First of all, this is a Microsoft Word for DOS question, but I figured that some of you Windows Word users might remember DOS :-). Also I read the FAQ on comp.periphs.printers but didn't find the answer. I have also read books on WORD, including the manual. I am trying to use Word 5.x for DOS with an HP-compatible laser printer. The printer only has two resident type faces and only in two sizes, something like courier and elite, 10 and 12 point. So I guess its compatible with an HPLJ2 or something. But it does have a slot for a font cartridge. Since I told WORD (during installation) that I am using an HPLJII printer, it only gives me those two choices for fonts. I want more (but it doesn't have to be much more). So I want to buy a font cartridge. All I want is one or two faces, with a couple of options for size, with at least an 18 point size and preferably up to 24 or so. Now I know I could get a postscript font cartridge, but I doubt the printer has enough memory. I also could get into downloading fonts, but again I think the printer's memory is extreamly limited. So here are the questions: After I install the font cartridge: how do I tell WORD that this is no longer just a simple HPLJII, but rather, an upgraded model? Can anyone recommend a font cartridge? If I were to use downloadable fonts, how would I make WORD aware of these? Thanks in advance !!! ^G^G^G -- Chris Kushmerick kushmer@bnlux1.bnl.gov --I found my niche in life, I just didn't fit in.

Both questions result in the same solution. You have to update the .dbs file for your printer with information on the installed fonts (downloaded or cartridge, does not matter). This could be done with the makeprd.exe program given by Microsoft on no cost. You then need information on the character width of each char of the new font, unless you keep fixed fonts. Information could be entered in ASCII code, but takes quite a while to come along with the syntax, but it does work great. So prior to starting the project decide wether half or even a total day is it worth to you updating the printer driver, instead of switching to a GUI for word processing (Windows or GEM if running a slow PC). Well... there are alternatives to a GUI. First, though, regarding cartridges, drivers, etc. Any good cartridge should come with a disk that has preset drivers for various WPs on it. One cartridge I've used that works well is the Pacific 25-in-1 Cartridge. Look in the catalogs to see if it's still available. BUT... a better solution, IMHO, is a software solution. I use MoreFonts, which gives me scalable (2 to 999, or something like that) fonts, comes with a bunch, and imports Adope Type 1 (of which tons are available, many over the net). Comes with drivers for many WP, including Word 5+ (I still use Word 5.0/Dos for the bulk of my writing). When I got it, it was about $85, but I'm not sure of availability. It's made by MicroLogic. There are several packages like this available still, I think - TrueType for DOS, etc. Look around... like a lot of good DOS software, you won't find it at the computer stores, but tons of it still is sold by mail order. Write me if you need more info on MoreFonts. Hope it helps... Ed
