Oh dear... This is going to be a meaty cross post/followup!!
Anyhow It looks like you have got the 3.5" connector the wrong way. The 5.25
disk connector is keyed and so shouldn't fit on the wrong way.
If you look at the pins on the 3.5 inch disk drives you might find that there
will be one pin missing. That indicates that that is the pin one end. The
cable will have a red stripe down one strand of the ribbon cable, that is pin
one on the cable. Just line these up (Taking care not to bend any pins or
miss a row of pins) and it should work.
But (isn't there always a but) things aren't that simple. Depending on the
age of the computer things might be as follows.
o If there is no 'twist' between the A: and B: connectors then
you will need to change the ds (drive select) jumpers on the drive.
if this is the case then cut your losses and get a technician to
do it. You have probably already lost money by having a computer
that doesn't work.
I have found that some older computers (Commodores and Amstrads)
use what I call straight through connectors.
o If the system is new there might be a bios option to swap the
drives under dos. This will allow you to boot from b:, but
may cause problems with OS's that use direct access to floppies
(ie Linux, etc).
Hope this helps...
Matt
