The 1024 cylinder limit is a BIOS limit, not a DOS one. Low level disk access via interrupt 13h is passed the cylinder number in ten bits, which The way to cope with this (assuming this is an IDE drive- you don't say explicitly, but master/slave is IDE talk) is to specify the drive in the BIOS setup as having half the actual cylinders but twice the actual heads. This gives you the right capacity, and the IDE drive translates these parameters transparently so that the computer never realises that they are being faked. You then partition the drive using the same (faked) parameters. When you have done that, the drive is DOS compatible, and there is no need to try to hide the "too big" portion from DOS. Probably this doesn't have anything to do with your problems, as you must have done something sensible in the BIOS setup to get the drive recognised at all, but I just couldn't keep quiet about the BIOS/DOS mix up.
