Free Mac <-> PC networking? CAP for DOS? NFS for Mac?

I'm looking for a cheap way to share files between my networked Mac and PC.
I have Windows for Workgroups on the PC and System 7.1 (with MacTCP) on the
Mac.

Currently I've rigged up a "FTP file system" between the two.
It involves using (on the PC) Trumpet Winsock, ws_ftp, ws_ftpd, (and on
the Mac) NCSA Telnet, Fetch, MacPerl and Applescript. (Thank God for
free software!) The two computers are sitting right next to each other,
so the set up is not all that inconvenient.

What would be nice is if there was a Appleshare server for DOS, or a free
NFS extension for System 7 (since there are free NFS servers for DOS).
Until WINE becomes a little more robust, using CAP under Linux is not
really an option, although it would work, and I'd love to go that route.

Does anyone have ideas of what else I can do? I'm not very savvy about
DOS networking. If there was a commercial package which did the job
for less than, say, $100 I could probably justify spending the money.

(Note: Since I've cross-posted this to so many newsgroups, I've set the
Followup-To: to comp.sys.mac.comm where most Mac networking topics are
discussed. Please look there for replies. I will also post a summary
there of any email responses I receive.)
