I'm not going into grandmother-teacher mode (at least not too
far into it <g>), but we need more exact reports of what goes on.
Your post quoted above could mean either that UNDELETE did not
offer any files for deletion, or that it offered some but failed
to actually undelete them when asked to do so, or that it failed to
load for some such reason as "incorrect DOS version", or that it
was not on your boot-floppy, or that the path to the copy on the
floppy was not set up correctly. Each of these facts would be
significant.
Since you appear to have wiped your DOS off the disk, I can't
fathom your remarks about the dealer not bothering to include
UNDELETE (to exclude which, in point of fact, would require more
work not less). What matters is whether there is a copy of
UNDELETE on your boot disk; look at its DIR (or DIRs, since its
DOS may be in its own directory), to see whether it's there.
Frankly, I get the impression that you are a bit out of your
depth. That is *not* a criticism - there is no earthly reason
why everyday computer users should understand more than the very
basics about the internals of their systems. How many everyday
drivers can fit new brake-pads on their car, or know when the
cylinder-head gasket needs changing? What benefits both drivers
and computer users is a reasonable amount of fear as to what may
happen if they try to alter things they do not understand.
Have you got anyone nearby who is a decent computer-nerd? If
so, I'd suggest you get him to look at what's gone on, and if he
likes post a technical summary so that we can suggest possible
choices. Then let him sort it out. If you go on without the
necessary understanding, you are likely to make things even worse.
