I need to access (and hopefully retrieve intact) the contents of a file that was created with DOUBLESPACE. This is the situation: Someone else's computer Olivetti Echos Model 43, with 165 Mb. HDD, PC (//NOT// MS) DOS V 7, Microsoft Windows V. 3.1. I was the one who zeroed out the C:\ drive and re-installed DOS and Windows, about 5 months ago, after the computer had been stoled and subsequently recovered, but only after the owner's data and programms had been removed and spanish language versions of all software installed. I never checked to see whether there were any other drives on the computer. YESTERDAY, I noticed when looking over the owner's shoulder, that there was an "I" drive and a "D" drive as well as a "C" drive on the computer. When I examined the "I" drive, and saw that one file had spanish text I knew that whatever was on this drive had been installed by the thieves. I deleted the contents of the drive, and then the drive itself. After doing so, Everything in the "C" disappeared --- no more compuserve directory (or contents), no Word for Windows, no DOS and no documents!!! No back-ups of any kind had been made by the owner. The file DBLSPACE.000 was now on the "C" drive's root directory (it //had// been on the "I" drive. I loaded laplink onto the computer and copied this massive (165 Mb) file onto //MY// laptop. There it sits. I can see (using MS Word, MS Write and Norton Disk Edit) that the data (and other files) are all (I think) still safe in this file. I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO GET THE DATA (most importantly) //OUT// of this file. I can always reinstall the software. Part of the problem is that this program (doublespace) is a MS-DOS V.6.22 program, I believe, so I suppose I need that version of DOS to access it. Assuming that is accurate: (a) will MS DOS v. 6.2 work or does it //have// to be V. 6.22? (b) This huge file is the size of the now uncompressed hard drive. If I try to re-load the file onto the computer from which it came, there is insufficient room for Windows, DOS, etc... How do I reload DOUBLESPACE in such a way that I can copy this huge 165 Mb file DBLSPACE.))) to its home computer //after// recreating the proper environment? (c) what is the order of the steps I should take? (d) is there a way to extract the files that are now imbedded in the DBLSPACE.000 file? Thanks very much for your help. Try DRVSPACE /MOUNT on the drive where it's stored. -- Marcus Houlden marcus_houlden (at) hotmail (dot) com http://members.xoom.com/mhoulden Remove all the junk to reply PGP Key ID: 0xF1AEE198 or 0x11C532FF Read this in a newsgroup?
