In article <Pine.3.05.9301212245.A4381-b100000@Ra.MsState.Edu> you write: >To any and all: >6. I asked earlier, but haven't seen a reply (maybe I sent the message to >Timbuctu, altho' I thought I was replying to a message) to why I have been >receiving replies to messages before I get the original message. I know >this list is for those who do not have access to the newsgroup. Are the >original messages being sent to that newsgroup before this list? I have >not been able to find the newsgroup here. This happens on a lot of large groups with heavy traffic. Other people on this group will surely answer the GeoQuestions for you, but I can take a stab at this one. It has to do with the fact that Usenet is the product of many servers, local networks, and gateways that are geographicly far apart. When you use a newsreader, you see a message number, but that number is only local and dependent upon the order that your site has recieved it. Individual computing centers send their stuff out at irregular intervals, and it is all transfered (for the most part) by UUCP, or Unix to Unix copy protocol. So a message originates in a small site A, and is often first seen in a relatively nearby site B which sensd their stuff out more often. Your site recieves the message from B first (the reply) and then the message from site A (the original post). Things like this often get screwy, and there is no real way to insure that the order is the same everywhere. So the big long thing in angle brackets eg <Pine.3.05.etc@Ra.MsState.Edu> is the really important number for identifying a message. (This is just one way that it can happen). >Thanks in advance for any replies. And to all a good night. Adieu. So it is not a conspiricy against you, it just seems that way. darkangl@sage.cc.purdue.edu (ecn and feserve addresses coming soon...)
