I am running pcgeos/working model on a 486/33 with 8 megs ram, 80meg HD, SVGA monitor, etc etc. System resources are quite adequate, I believe. I recently downloaded from wuarchive.wustl.edu all of the gwfont0##.ZIP files full of fonts. I then UNZIPPED them into the appropriate directory (/fonts or whatever) Anyway. After playing around with them for a while, the system hung. Dead as a doornail. First time geos has done that sort of thing to me. However, I seem to recall that there was a solution for this, (I have been following this group for a while)... something to do with handles..? Can someone PLEASE tell me what I should do to make geos happy again??? Thanks! I appreciate any help I can get. Tim Chipman 901106c@axe.acadiau.ca 901106c@dragon.acadiau.ca ........ Tim- I don't know if handles would help, but try upping your FILES= setting in your CONFIG.SYS file. I believe that PC/Geos opens all font files it finds during start up (for instance, try deleting any of the fonts inside PC/Geos--you can't, because they're 'in use'). Noel Ang noir@netcom.com

I have had similar behaviour on my system. Check your CONFIG.SYS file and
make sure you've got "FILES = 120" (or some number higher than 120).
Personally, I've found the best solution is to pick the fonts you find most
useful and get rid of the rest. :) My font directory had 127 files in it,
after a cleanout, it had 50. I don't use the "Inter" font, as it's a big
font (in terms of disk space and/or memory) and tends to crash things all
by itself. I had similar problems with Kramer, recently, but got rid of it
since I didn't particularly like it.
I don't know if adjusting your Handles setting will help in this situation.
The main trick is the FILES setting, since each time you use a font, GEOS
opens that font, using up one "file" in DOS.
