background: due to MSDOS's wonderful 8.3 character limit for filenames, it makes porting version control programs from unix to dos a little more interesting. I was just starting to recompile and poke around the RCS source code to see if I could hack a work around for the 1 char extension when I happened to read the FAQ for this newsgroup (oct 20 1992 version) and it mentioned that there is a version that fixes this annoyance, but the informer could not remember the ftp site. 1 char extension limit (for example source files .ASM, .CPP, .HPP). Has the ftp site for this version been confirmed by anyone? So far, I have located version of RCS55 with a makefile for microsoft C, and a version that was made for borlandC, but I have not found that version with the fix for one char extensions. If anyone here knows where it is, please post the site. Also, I was thinking about modifying RCS to use alternate directories for storing logfiles (instead of being restricted to ./RCS or .) by using an environment variable to specify the directory, or like PVCS, use a config file in the current directory that contains a list of source path for logfiles. Before I begin reinventing the wheel, has anyone else already done this, or is interested in collaborating with me on this little project? - Frank
