Books on programming PC's?

I'm looking for a book that describes how to access the hardware on
PC's; specific application involves the com ports (I've got a program
which is hardwired to use com1, I want to generalize or at least
change it to com2). A check at the local CompUSA revealed few books
on programming, and most of those covered Windows 3.1 in pretty good
depth but not accessing the hardware much other than graphics.
