WANTED: Programmer's Guide to IDE

Does anyone have (or know where I can get) more information on the IDE
interface??  I'm looking for a definition of functions that are available
through the IDE interface, and how to access them.  Specifically, I'm sure
there's a function that will return the ACTUAL drive parameters for the
attached drive (not what the BIOS might *think* the parameters are).  I
expect there are other not-too-well-known features and functions that the
IDE interface supports as well.
