Need help color-cycling (and maybe palette-switching)

Greetings! I've recently decided to convince the computer that I am indeed
a fool, and have started working on heavy-duty graphics routines. (Actually,
the computer decided I was a fool the time I accidentally redirected the
keyboard interrupt to send all registers and everything to the screen...
but that's a different story.) Anyway, I'm trying to come up with a routine
to cycle the VGA DAC a la Fractint. Could someone either explain to me
(in newbie terms, please; I'd rather feel like I'm back in elementary school
than feel even more confused) [:)] how to go about doing this, or perhaps
give me a general shove in the direction of an appropriate archive/reference?
If it matters, I'm running Turbo C++ version 3.0, and my VGA is effectively
just a vanilla one... (Actually, it's a Trident 8800 with what _looks_ like
512K on board, but it flatly refuses to do any of the 256-color higher-
resolution modes.) Thanks in advance!
