The number of files in the root directory is limited in ALL
disk-formats under DOS. There is no limit to the number of files that
can reside in sub-directories.

The limit is for 360k floppys 112 entries, and for most harddisk 512
entries. For both systems you can lay unlimited number of files if you
use subdirectory (limited by disk-space of course). The FAT doesn't
have any limit in that regard.
