As a software developer, I have a slightly different perspective on
this. I too hate copy protection, but we found that it is essential.
We have used a dongle on our package (a raster-to-vector conversion
package, selling for about $2000). We apologize to our users for this
in the documentation.

However, we have been told by every distributor that we have signed
up that they would not carry the product if we did not have this
protection. The dealers are not willing to carry products without
it. It is extremely difficult to locate good distributors for such
software, and we cannot afford to do anything which would cause them
to reject or under-sell the product for any avoidable reason.
