Difference between "ESC" and "8" ??

I am using getch from Borland C++ 3.1 and I can not
tell the difference between the "ESC" key and the 
"8" key.  When I tell it to do this if I hit the ESC key
it also will do it if I hit the 8 key.  Anyone with ideas
of how to make it tell the difference.
