Parallel Port Programming

I'm doing a project which involves programming the parallel port on a
PC. Can someone direct me to reference books about this subject? The
information I need is

1) How to write data to the parallel port
2) How to READ data from the 8 parallel port data pins (I heard it is
possible to do so on ATs and most clones?)
3) How to access the control signals (ACK, etc.)

Rgds
